AmeriCorps Learning Early Achieves Potential program
- AmeriCorps LEAP members work one-on-one in with pre-school children who are at risk of falling behind in the skills necessary for success in kindergarten.
- A partnership with ABDO Publishing brings donations of preschool books.
- LEAP members give children they serve a series of books to build home libraries.
- They also promote and model out loud with routine reading in the home with parents and caregivers.
- Studies support teaching children skills to manage behaviors prior to entering kindergarten so they can focus on learning.
- Reading at home allows children to bond & increase word awareness.
- A child needs a personal history of at least 40,000 word exposures to be on equal footing with the average child entering kindergarten.
